Walmart’s recent removal of its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies has ignited a discussion on corporate social responsibility, as highlighted by MSD Lawyers Partner Camron Dowlatshahi in an interview with Market Domination Overtime. Dowlatshahi reflects on the evolution of DEI initiatives post-George Floyd’s death in 2020, noting an initial strong corporate support for under-represented communities. However, he observes a shift in the political landscape, influenced by the Trump administration and rising conservative movements, leading companies like Walmart to cater to more conservative populations. Despite these changes, workplace discrimination remains a significant issue, with the EEOC receiving 88,531 new discrimination charges in fiscal year 2024—a 9.2% increase from the previous year—and securing nearly $700 million for over 21,000 victims of employment discrimination. Nonetheless, Dowlatshahi mentions a growing climate of fear regarding these matters.
